Family Cries Foul As Their ‘Healthy’ Daughter Dies In Rivers Hospital After She Complained Of Missed Period | Details
The family of a young graduate who died while visiting a hospital for a simple procedure are demanding justice while accusing the hospital of medical negligence.
The 24-year-old first-class graduate tragically passed away at Paragon Clinics and Images in Port Harcourt in an unfolding heart-breaking story, ChannelsTV reports.
In early February, the news of Rebekah Sekidika’s untimely death sent shock waves through the town.
Described as both beauty and brains, Rebekah had just graduated with top honors from Benson Idahosa University and was set to embark on a journey to further her studies abroad.
Tragically, her dreams were cut short when she visited the clinics after she missed her period for three months.
She was healthy when she went to the hospital on February 2 for a diagnostic procedure that “isn’t life threatening”. ‘
A number of tests, including pregnancy test, were done on the 24-year-old and they all came out negative.
While waiting to be attended to, she joined her online class with her laptop there at the hospital before going in to see the doctor.
However, minutes later, her parents report hearing commotion coming from the theatre and they were later informed that Rebekah had died.
The bereaved father said he saw her in a pool of blood when he went into the theatre and he doesn’t understand how his healthy daughter would end up that way.
Rebekah’s father, Mr. Sampson Sekidika, who accused the hospital of medical negligence, urged the Rivers State government, human rights organizations, and civil society groups to join forces in putting an end to such medical negligence.
He also advised the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) to be impartial in their investigations.
The NMA Chairman in Rivers State, Dr. Ebbi Robinson, expressed sympathy for the Sekidika family but noted that the incident was a result of a medical procedure gone awry and should not be a murder petition.
The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, explained that samples for an autopsy and toxicology were taken from the deceased before her burial two weeks ago and are being conducted.
Despite Rebekah’s burial, her family’s counsel remains steadfast in their pursuit of justice, alleging negligence on the part of Paragon Clinics and Images.
