See How This Mum Saved Her Daughter’s Life

A mum-of-two, Amanda Davies, has recounted how she saved her daughter’s life by lying to hospital staff about the possible cause of her toddler’s condition. Several doctors had previously dismissed her increasing concern about the cause of her daughter’s condition, and on a fresh consultation, she lied that her little girl had hit her head and vomited after falling over. This immediately spurred doctors into action and 3-year-old Lil was sent off for scans which revealed a ‘lemon-sized’ tumour growing in her skull.

Amanda said:

“I lied because I didn’t think I would be taken seriously. I had been turned away from so many places that I feared if I’d just gone in and said Lil was having walking and speech problems, then I’d be told I was ‘in the system’ and just had to wait. I still owe the NHS for saving her life and giving her the care she needs, but I’m frustrated that we weren’t given answers earlier in the process.

She went downhill on a holiday to Spain. She couldn’t walk any further than three steps without falling over, so we had to get her a pushchair. Me and my husband Aled said we would go private when our health visitor also expressed concerns.

When I Googled the symptoms, one option was a brain tumour, but I convinced myself that it was so rare it was unlikely. It got to the stage where she was very miserable all the time and would point to the back of her head and say ‘ow, it hurts. It was at that point that I had to go to A&E – and I knew that I could not take no for an answer.”

After a visit to the University Hospital of Wales Cardiff, where Amanda lied about Lil’s condition, she was admitted for tests, diagnosed with the tumour and operated. Thankfully, she’s now on a long road to recovery.
