Ways to Groom Your Average Child into An A-list Student This New Term (Part 2)

Previously, I shared six ways you can groom your average child into an A-list student, especially this new term (read here). Find five more things you should do in addition to those previously shared:

1. Introduce Music and a Foreign Language: Research has shown that children who learn a foreign language have 14% higher scores in their exam than those who never did. Similarly, music, especially playing stringed instruments and the piano, would help a child perform better in verbal and maths skills respectively.

2. Teach Delayed Gratification & Self Control: Delayed gratification is one of the most effective personal traits of successful people. Hirsh et.al. (2010) in their study showed that delayed gratification would improve academic performance in children. John Medina (2010) also asserts that self-control (through delayed gratification) is more connected to success than a child’s IQ.

3. Nutritious Breakfast: Breakfast is a crucial part of every child’s day. It affects everything from memory to creativity in the classroom. Children who go hungry or don’t have balanced breakfasts are more inclined to become distracted from learning at school, or give up more easily when faced with challenges.

4. Plenty of Physical Exercise: Encouraging adequate physical exercise stimulates brain growth and boosts cognitive performance. Research has shown that physical exercise would boost levels of ‘Brain-Derives Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF)’, a substance essential for the growth of brain cells in children and adults.

5. Praise: Celebrate your child’s successes no matter how small they are to motivate them to achieve more. Then, always work with their teachers to discover the best learning resources to invest in per time as well as ways of regularly assessing and improving on your child’s weak areas.
