Baby Born With Bowel Outside Body Marks 1st Birthday

Fran Groves,  a 26 -year-old mother discovered during her 12 – week scan that her baby suffered from the condition ‘gastroschisis,’ which often causes some newborns to have their intestines or bladder exposed. For this reason, Fran, had periodic visits to the hospital during pregnancy.

“I was with my husband Paul and suddenly the consultant noticed something amiss, it came as a shock, as the majority of newborns’ intestines have moved inside their abdomen by 11 weeks’ gestation, after initially developing outside the umbilical cord. I really didn’t expect it. Fran said.”

Dailymail, reveals that Fran, had ultra sounds every four weeks, to check for progress and discovered at her 16 week scan, only her baby’s bowels were exposed. Fran and her husband were informed that her pregnancy should not progress beyond 37 weeks because it is unhealthy for the baby.
The expectant mum was induced for labour late December of 2015 and delivered five days after following an emergency caesarean. Fran recalled:

“It was scary to be told at my first scan that something wasn’t right. It was the last thing that we expected. We were told our baby was just one in 3,000 babies who would be born with this condition and we had so many concerns.

I was surrounded by about 20 doctors, nurses and support staff, then, finally, Sydney was there. Doctors warned me she might not scream, but she let out a giant yell. It was the best sound.

Her bowel was wrapped tightly to her body, with what looked like a special version of Clingfilm, which would help protect it.”

Sydney, who weighed 5lbs 8 oz,was immediately put in an incubator. Over the next couple of days, Sydney began healing and the ‘clingfilm’, a silo bag was reduced in size and eventually gravity pushed Sydney bowels into her body. After 4 days, doctors stitched up Sydney after a 2 hour operation.
She was discharged after staying over a month in the hospital weighing 7lb. The happy and bubbly child marked her first birthday totally healthy. Although she visits the hospital for regular check ups, there has been no cause for alarm.
Truly a miracle!
