How a Mother’s Carelessness Led to the Death of her 18 Month Old Son in Benin

An 18-month-old baby, Israel Buhari, has died in Benin city after his mother accidentally served him kerosene in place of water. The tragedy occurred after the toddler complained of thirst to his mother, a kerosene seller.

Nigerian Observer reports:

Israel, the only boy of four children, was said to have swallowed the first gulp before spitting out the remaining content in his mouth after which his mother realized her grave ‘mistake’.

Few minutes later, it was said that the toddler’s eyes turned pure white as he screamed uncontrollably. Neighbors who came to her aid fed him palm oil and rushed him to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead a couple of hours later.

Ata Buhari, the mother, narrating the ordeal, said one of her kids had filled an empty plastic of beverage with water which she took with her to the shop. Unknowingly, she picked the wrong bottle and gave her son after he complained of thirst.

Hassan Buhari, father of the deceased has pleaded with the State Government and kindhearted individuals to assist his family, as they live from hand to mouth.
