Whitney Adeniran: Lagos State Places Chrisland Schools On Probation | Details
The Lagos State Government has placed Chrisland High School, Ikeja, on probation for one academic session, PUNCH reports.
This is, according to the Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, to monitor the school’s adherence to safety policies and guidelines.
This is also following the tragic death of a student of the school, Whitney Adeniran, during the school’s inter-house sports competition at the Agege Stadium, Lagos.
The state government had filed two counts of involuntary manslaughter, and reckless and negligent acts against Chrisland School Limited over the death of the 12-year-old student.
The suspension of the school was disclosed in a press statement posted on the Lagos State Government official website.
Mrs. Adefisayo stated this while giving an update on the recent meeting between the management of Chrisland Schools and government agencies under the Lagos State Joint Task Force in charge of the implementation of the child protection and safeguarding policy.
The government directed the management of the School to implement short and long-term reforms in school governance, including strengthening its risk and safety management.
The management of the Chrisland Schools was also directed by the state government to recruit a certified risk manager to conduct and render a detailed analysis of risk management of the group of schools and ensure all students, staff, and stakeholders of the school affected by the death of the late Adeniran were given psycho-social therapy and trauma counseling.
“The stipulated conditions are outcomes of official investigations and reviews by all the agencies that form the Task Force and an example of the usual conditions precedent to reopening schools closed for any form of infraction in Lagos State,”
Adefisayo said.
The Managing Director of Chrisland Schools, Mrs Ibironke Adeyemi, promised that the school would fulfil all requirements as directed by the ministry.
The government agencies at the meeting were representatives of the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Youth and Social Development, the Lagos State Safety Commission, and the Office of Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency among others.
