Boko Haram has displaced over 850,000 Nigerians – NEMA
According to recently gathered statistics by the National Emergency Management Agency, there are now over 850,000 internally displaced Nigerians (IDP).
The displaced persons, who were victims of terrorism from the North-East region, are presently living in 31 relief camps across the country.
The Coordinator, North-Central zone of the agency, Mr. Abdulsalam Mohammed, made the revelation on Thursday, December 18, in Lagos, during an interview with journalists at a retreat for members of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness.
Mohammed said: “It is difficult to know the number of displaced persons in country because some are in the camps while some are living in host communities. So, giving the accurate figure will be hard but those in the camps across the country are over 850,000 in 31 camps and 20 out of these camps are from the North-East.”
The NEMA official would also state further that the statistics were arrived at only two days ago, which supposedly paints the true picture of the effect of the insurgency of Boko Haram.
He said: “As I talk to you, my Director-General is in Adamawa State. We are mopping up displaced persons from several states because they (displaced persons) fled to other neighbouring states from the North-East. They are in Kano, Kaduna, Abuja, Plateau and Nasarawa states. So, we are putting them in all those established camps to ascertain their number and give them the appropriate care that they require as citizens,” Mohammed added.
When is this menace going to stop?
Am happy he said it was difficult to pinpoint d exact number of displaced persons cos I was just going to say they must b more than that no . may God heal our land cos things r getting out of hand
