Activist, Harrison Gwamnishu Raises Alarm Over ‘Snake Bite’ Cult Initiation Of Students In Delta State Schools: ‘Check Your Children Now’
Nigerian activist, Harrison Gwamnishu has alerted the public on an alleged cult initiation of students in some primary and secondary schools in Asaba, Delta State.
Gwamnishu, who made this known on his social media pages on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, said the initiation process known as “snake bite” has allegedly been performed on 61 students in a private school in Asaba.
Sharing some videos and pictures of the marks on the students, he urged parents to keep a close eye on their children.
He wrote:
“The video of the snake BITE initiation in Asaba. We identified 61 Primary/Secondary School students in a private school in Asaba. They don’t use stones or razors. It’s paper and incantation.
Check your child if she or he has this mark. If yes, it’s a mark of initiation into cultism. The mark is called a “snake bite”. Check your children now. It’s happening in schools.
This is happening already in some secondary schools in Asaba, Delta State.”
In an update, the activist said he has tendered all the evidence to the State Ministry of Education for further investigation. He added:
“On the student snake bite trend. We went to the Ministry of Education office in Asaba and tendered all evidence. They instructed us to write a letter to the office and that they will investigate it.
The school name with more than 61 students with snake bite marks is Divine Ambassadors Group of Schools located at 74 Road Asaba.
Please take care of your children. I still want to inform everyone that I received calls threatening to deal with me and that I should delete the video and never talk about snake bite.
Can the Government intervene immediately and get to the root of this all? These are children and some thought it was just a GAME.”

“UPDATE ON THE SNAKE BITE.
From Commissioner of Education Onoriode Sunday
DTSG Decries Cultism, Other Negative Vices Among Students and Learners.
Delta State Government (DTSG) has condemned what it described as unwarranted activities of some students and learners in primary and secondary schools who were carrying out initiation of their colleagues into secret cult.
The State Commissioner for Primary Education, Chief Sunday Onoriode and her counterpart in Secondary Education, Mrs Rose Ezewu stated this in Asaba while reacting to a trending video from an unknown individual who interrogated some of the students and learners to find out the reason behind the mark on their fingers.
The sender of the story said the children called the incision mark ‘snake bite’. In a statement by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (Mr. Augustine Oghoro) on behalf of the Commissioners, perpetrators of the negative act would be fished out and dealt with accordingly.
The statement noted that the sender of the video narrated how a male teacher in a secondary school in Asaba was almost beaten up by a female student who was involved in the nefarious act.
The statement stressed that the State Government was investigating the incident and enjoined students and learners to desist from acts connected to initiations and report any occurrence to their headteachers or principal.
However, parents and guardians are advised to be vigilant and report any untoward development in this direction to the Office of the Ministry of Education nearest to them.”
