Malia Obama & Mum, Michelle Touring Colleges In The Big Apple

Malia Obama might be following in her father’s footsteps — she’s checking out colleges in the Big Apple.

The Twitterverse lit up Friday as Malia and her mom Michelle were spotted on a private tour of several NYU buildings and later seen on the campuses of Columbia University — the President’s alma mater — and Barnard College.

“Malia was all smiles and seemed like a really nice person,” said Barnard student Johanna Fuller, 21, who snapped a photo of the First Daughter on campus.

Malia, 16, studies at the prestigious Sidwell Friends school in Washington.

The NYU Local blog quoted a tipster who rode an elevator withMichelle and Malia during a visit that reportedly included the school’s Weinstein and Goddard Halls.

“Apparently everyone was told that the elevators were ‘shut down’ for the 10 minutes they were in the building… but I knew the truth!” the source reported.

Later, Barnard music and anthropology major Courtney Craig, 21, scored a lunchtime seat a few tables down from the First Lady at Community Food & Juice on Broadway in Morningside Heights.

Craig said Michelle Obama “dined with other adults I did not recognize, and her daughter, Malia, sat at a separate table nearby with a group of her friends. There were about 10 Secret Service agents sitting inside the restaurant, and about seven big black SUVs outside.”

As the First Lady left with smiles and waves, “everyone stood up and clapped for her,” Craig said.

Malia has previously visited Stanford University and Berkeley, so New York faces some tough competition.

Obama referenced his daughter’s college search during an appearance in Indianapolis Friday while pitching his proposal to offer Americans two free years of community college.

“Malia is now at the age where she is looking at colleges,” Obama said. He compared her college search to his own, describing today’s school scene as fancier.

“These days, I hear everybody is looking for fancy gyms and gourmet food and really spiffy dorms,” Obama said.

The President said that when he attended Occidental College in California before transferring to Columbia, the food was not that appetizing. “I do know there was something on the menu that we called ‘roast beast,’ because we couldn’t really tell what kind of meat it was.”
