Police Say Woman Whose Unborn Baby Was Removed From Her Stomach During Attack Had No Clue

The mum-to-be whose baby was cut from her stomach by a frenzied attacker (read here) had no clue the foetus had been taken in the aftermath of the assault, police have said.

Michelle Wilkins, 26, tragically willed herself on to survive the horrifying injuries under the mistaken belief her baby might survive.

Longmont police officer Billy Sawyer, who was among the first on the scene, said Ms Wilkins had been spurred on to survival by thoughts her child might live.

He told New York Daily News: “She had no clue the baby wasn’t there. Part of the reason she was surviving was for that child. There’s no doubt in my mind,” he added. “It was her maternal instincts to stay alive for that child.”

The expectant mum was brutally attacked when she answered an online advert for baby clothes placed online by suspect Dynel Lane.

The 34-year-old allegedly choked and beat Ms Wilkins before performing the crude operation with a kitchen knife and a broken bottle.

She was left bleeding “from head to toe” on a bed in the house for more than one hour before she was able to raise the alarm.

She suffered unimaginable injuries in the assault and was left “scarred beyond imagination”, her parents said yesterday.

Police officer Sawyer added: “I guarantee her body was not going to let her give up. She’s mentally tough. That fight inside of her was real.”

Lane later took the foetus to hospital, claiming she had a miscarriage, police said.

The suspect, who police say is likely to suffer from mental health issues, was charged with attempted first-degree murder, assault and child abuse resulting in death.

She could also face a murder charge under Colorado law if it is determined the baby lived while outside the mother’s womb.

Ms Wilkins’ parents have started a fund to raise money for their daughter’s recover and say they have been touched by messages of support and donations from around the world.
