See What This Woman Got For Refusing Her Ex’s Marriage Proposal

Helen Byrom was forced to beg for her life as her ex-boyfriend, Vincent Bowen, beat her up, strangled her, doused her in lighter fluid as he whispered he was going to burn her for rejecting his marriage proposal.

He beat her so badly police officers thought her blonde, blood-soaked hair was dyed red.

Despite being convicted of grievous bodily harm, he was jailed for just 28 months of which he will serve only half.

“It’s sickening,” Miss Byrom said. “I was horribly injured and he will be out in October – free to walk the streets. When he attacked me he was like a wild animal. He got a short sentence but I’ve been left with a life sentence.”

Miss Byrom, a team manager for a local authority, had been dating Bowen for three years when she broke up with him in September 2013. He moved out of her home in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, but a month later returned and proposed to her. Miss Byrom rejected his proposal, but felt sorry for him and said he could live in her house as a lodger. She then started another relationship, but remained good friends with unemployed Bowen.

Only on August 2, 2014, Bowen came home drunk and launched into a vicious attack. After punching Miss Byrom multiple times in the face, he strangled her then doused her in lighter fluid and whispered, ‘I’m going to burn you.’

Miss Byrom begged for her life while Bowen said, ‘this is what you have driven me to.’ As Bowen reached for a lighter, Miss Byrom ran out her house and sought comfort at her neighbour’s house. She was taken to the accident and emergency department at Dewsbury Hospital and was left needing six stitches and counselling. Three hours after the incident Bowen turned himself in, and on October 18, 2014, he appeared at Leeds Crown Court.

  • That is not a good judgement. He might come out and come back after her. Is it a crime for a woman to reject a man’s proposal? The woman should file restraining order from him when he comes out in.October

  • Na wa o so thats d kind of man she would have married. She made a big mistake by allowing her ex 2 lodge in her house.14mnths?Wat a short jail term 4 attempted murder

  • This sentence is not good enough for the degree of atrocity he committed. What if she had died? See how he beat her mercilessly even after she housed him. That man deserves nothing less than 25years in confinement.

  • At all. That sentence is very wrong. He should be jailed for life

  • There is no justice yet for that woman! That man is sick and should be kept away from the street for a long time.

  • Awwwww this is too bad….that judgement is not good enough for what he did..he should be jailed for life.

  • They thought her hair was dyed red bc if blood yet the judge gave him 28months sentence to serve only half? I think the judge is sick,I would have appealed that judgement if I was the one. but I think the woman has a part of the blame too, when u allow an ex back into ur life & home wt no hope of reconciliation u shld b prepared for his jealousy especially when you start dating again

  • Why 28 months?Didn’t they see what he did to her? This is unfair

  • The sentence just too short not good enough at all he deserves far more
