Dad Upset With Little Sons Over Potty Training Did This

A dad upset with his 2 and 3-year-old sons’ lack of progress at potty training brutally assaulted them, leading to the death of one. “I’m tired of beating their ass and them not learning,” Anthony Trakemon Powell, 24, reportedly told his sister, according to court documents.

His 3-year-old son, Tristan Powell died with a fractured skull and swelling of the brain after he allegedly struck him so hard he knocked his head on the bathroom floor.

According to Prosecutors, Tristian’s aunt even described the sound that Tristan’s head made when his head hit the floor of the bathroom.

Afterward, the boy complained he was sleepy, court documents say. When the father awoke in the morning and discovered his child had problems breathing, the aunt called an ambulance.

“The defendant’s attitude was fairly nonchalant,” prosecutor, Spence said. “In fact, according to witnesses, he was counting his money as he was riding to the hospital in the ambulance.”

Only after the family arrived at Texas Children’s Hospital did an officer notice that Tristan’s younger brother, who was wrapped in a blanket, was also seriously hurt. The story the prosecutor told the judge indicated Powell had not only beaten the younger boy, but also severely scalded him with hot water.

The prosecutor said the aunt, Prosha Nicole Land, 23, described listening as Powell took the younger boy into a bathroom. She heard running water, then heard the boy scream “louder than she had ever heard him scream.”

In Jasper, the boy’s mother remembered receiving a phone call from the father telling her Tristan was hospitalized.

“The way his voice sounded, I didn’t think it was something as bad as it was. Thought he maybe had an allergic reaction or something,” said Jade Tukes, Tristan’s mother.

The boys’ aunt has been charged with injury to a child by omission. Prosecutors indicated in court other charges are expected.

Prosecutors say Anthony had picked up his sons from their mother in Jasper on Mother’s Day, and brought them to stay with him at his sister’s apartment in southeast Houston.

If he’s convicted, the boys’ father could be sentenced to death.
