DISTURBING: Mum Caught While Trying To Sell Her Baby On The Internet

A South African mum, has appeared in court after she was charged for trying to sell her 19-month-old baby on the Internet for 5,000 rands ($380).

According to Vanguard, the 20 year-old woman, whose name is unknown was caught by the police who were tipped off when she tried to sell her son on the popular advertising website Gumtree.

Company spokeswoman of Gumtree South Africa’s customer service, Claire Cobbledick, said in a statement that after they had been alerted that a woman had set up an advert on the site that she had a baby to sell, they immediately moved to tackle the issue.

She said: “The team immediately removed the ad and blocked the user’s account. (We) escalated the issue to the corporate office that engages law enforcement on suspected criminal cases.”

Spokesman for the Hawks special crimes investigation unit, Hangwani Mulaudzi, told AFP: “We met her and there was an exchange of money with an undercover police officer. She gave us the money and we arrested her directly.

The child has been taken away by social workers and the case has been adjourned until October 26.
