Husband Incurs Vast Debt, Absconds Leaving Wife to Deal with Creditors

A certain Mrs Sarah Omidiji implored a customary court in Ejigbo area of Lagos to dissolve the 5-year-old marriage between her and her husband, Julius Omidiji, after the man borrowed money from various creditors without her knowledge and subsequently ran away from their matrimonial home, leaving her to deal with his creditors.

The disillusioned woman, who seems to be seeking the divorce in order to have peace, said she married Julius in 2011 after several years of courtship. Sarah, on getting married to her husband, says she discovered that he was not only jobless, but was also living a fake life, PM News reports.

Julius seems to have borrowed money that ran into millions of naira before he abandoned his wife for three years, cutting off all forms of communication.

Sarah insists that she was not aware of his debts and was not carried along until he escaped from the house and creditors started threatening her to produce her husband. She added that the creditors came after her, accusing her of hiding Julius from them. Sarah who says there are no children in the marriage, pleaded that the court should dissolve the union because she no longer loves or trusts Julius. She said,

“My lord, when my husband abandoned our matrimonial home without informing me, I searched the house to see if he left any note, I only saw a long list of those he was owing, I became afraid.”

The president of the court, Mrs Bolajoke, noted that the matter had suffered several adjournments before the judgment because Julius Omidiji had not appeared in court. Bolajoke believes the marriage had broken down irretrievably and consequently dissolved the marriage as Sarah Omidiji pleaded.
