SAD! New Mum’s Fiance & Mother Die While Racing to Hospital

A 24-year-old US new mum, Crystal Matrau-Belt, got devastating news from her stepdad three hours after her son, Jeremiah’s birth that her mother and fiance had been killed while racing to the hospital for the delivery. Police say that speed was a factor in the crash which saw her man, Emil Skokan, hit a tree.

The grieving new mum reportedly told the Kalamazoo Gazette:

“I got a text from (Emil), “Do you want me to bring up anything?” and just said “I’ll meet you up there” and that he loved me. I asked my stepdad, ‘Do you know where Emil is?’ My dad said, ‘Honey, that’s what we need to talk to you about’. I just all of a sudden had a sinking feeling something was wrong. I just didn’t know that it was my fiance and my mum,” she said.

She continued:

“They were trying to get here. They didn’t know what was going on, and a lot of medical stuff was happening. Their main focus was being able to be here because I didn’t want them to miss anything. They just wanted to be there for me. She (her mum) could not wait for him to be here. She had big plans to take him to the zoo, to Disney World.”

Skokan, who has two other sons — Emil Skokan IV and Kayden Skokan — would have celebrated his 35th birthday on Sunday.

Ms Matrau-Belt said she is pulled between joy at being a first-time mum to grief at losing the two people she loved the most.

“I waited so long to be able to have a child, and to have a child but then have two things ripped out of my life, it’s just really hard to deal with and even process. I go to pick up (Jeremiah) and I see Emil in him. It’s hard, but just to know that I have a piece of Emil — that helps a little bit,” she said.
