Meet the Nigerian Mum of Three Who is the First African NYPD Inspector

An American police woman of Nigerian descent and mum of three, Olufunmilayo Obe, was recently promoted to the post of Inspector by the New York Police Department (NYPD) in the United States, Tempo News reports. The former Deputy Inspector is said to be the first African to be promoted to such position in the history of the NYPD.

She began her career with the NYPD in June, 1992 as a Police Cadet and was sworn in as a New York City police officer in February 1994. She was promoted to Sergeant in December 2000, Lieutenant in July 2005, Captain in September 2008, and Deputy Inspector in June 2012.

She holds a BSc. degree in Computer Science from the City College of New York and a Master of Public Administration from Marist College. She’s also a graduate of the Police Management Institute at Columbia University.
