How Not to Raise a Spoiled Toddler

No parent wants to raise a child who is perceived as spoiled or typically acts like one. Don’t want to raise a spoiled rotten child? Get started by constantly applying these tips…

1. Stick to your rules.

Children learn from a very young age whether you’ll be consistent with limits or if whining or throwing a tantrum will get them what they want, so stay consistent to show them that you mean what you say and they aren’t above the rules.

2. Make them a helper.

Give your toddler a couple of age-appropriate chores such as putting books back on the shelf, bringing plates (non-breakable please!) to the sink. This will help them gain a sense of responsibility and not expect everything to be done for them.

3. Let them feel disappointment.

Your little one will be bummed when faced with disappointments but in time, they’ll learn how to face disappointment with grace and self-control.

4. Don’t give too many chances.

When disciplining your child, follow through on any consequence you’ve threatened and if you forgive, make sure you’re not giving too many chances. Otherwise, they won’t take  you and your rules seriously. Or any rules at all.

5. Don’t say “no” to everything.

Surprisingly, not giving toddlers enough leeway can sometimes be counterproductive. A child who hears “no” too often may think, “My mum says ‘no’ to everything, so I’m just going to do what I want to.”  Grant reasonable requests.
