How Red Cross Members Rescued Pregnant Woman Who Went into Labour in Traffic

A pregnant woman who got stuck in roads closed off for a marathon run has shared how she was rescued by the Red Cross Volunteers after her contractions began.

According to Mirror, the 30-year-oldu was driving with her 8-year-old daughter when she went into labour. Fearing that she would have her baby in the car, she tried to drive to her mum’s house. However, on the way, she got stuck in road closures and diversions because of the Manchester Marathon.

Stuck in the traffic jam, her pains began to get worse and at that moment, she realized her baby was coming.

She said: “Every road I went down was blocked off and I started to panic. The pains were getting stronger and stronger and I was stressing as I didn’t know where I was or how to get to the hospital.”

Claire frantically tried for another 20 minutes to get herself out of the marathon traffic, before pulling over to ask a race Marshall for help.

She continued, “I told her I was in labour but I didn’t know my way through the road closures. She didn’t know the area so couldn’t help. Luckily a Red Cross ambulance pulled up.”

The two red cross volunteers carried the expectant mum and her daughter, Mia into the ambulance and took them to hospital.

Claire, who works for a hearing aid company, said:

“They were brilliant. I was in a bit of a state by then as I thought I was never making it to hospital. They got my bags out of the car for me and were fantastic with Mia, making her laugh and keeping her calm, which calmed me down. When we got to hospital, they even took us to the ward and stayed with us to make sure we were OK.

I just want to try and find them so I can thank them and give them a card.

They were amazing, so reassuring and I want them to get the recognition they deserve.

One of them was in their 40s and the other in their 50s. I think one of them was called Nigel as he joked with Mia about naming her baby sister Nigella after him.

I really can’t thank them enough.”

She added that during labour, her baby, Tori, got stuck and cannot imagine what would have happened if she hadn’t got to hospital.
