Man Who Married His Mother-in-law After Falling In Love With Her Now Wants A Divorce

A 22-year-old Indian man, who did the unthinkable by leaving his wife and running off to marry his mother-in-law after falling in love with her has now realized his foolishness and says he wants a divorce.

According to reports from Dailymail, Suraj Mahto abandoned his wife, Lalita and then married her 42-year-old mother, Asha Devi.

The unusual affair started when Devi came to stay with the couple in the village of Puraini in the impoverished state of Bihar last year when Mahto became ill. They fell in love during the process.

After the mother-in-law returned home, he would call her and they would talk for hours on the phone and would also visit her at her home.

Fortunately for Lalita, she later got to know about the affair. She told her mother to stay away but she refused; even her father could not do anything to stop the forbidden affair.

Despite villagers frowning at the forbidden love, on the 1st of June this year, the pair eloped and married in nearby Dhamdaha. Two months on, the couple have both realized they have made a costly mistake.

Mahto said: ‘I have come to realize my folly now. I admit I have committed the mistake but will never repeat in future.

‘Now, I no longer treat her as my wife. Rather, I have started paying her regard as a mother.’

He added that he would go on his knee and beg his wife to have him back. The couple have a son together.

On the other hand, Mrs Devi is also seeking to undo her actions.

”No longer do I treat him as my husband but as a son-in-law. We have already a filed divorce petition in the court and I want to return to my husband as soon as possible,” Devi said.
