Amazing! 65 Years After Parents Banned Them From Marrying, Couple Finally Tie The Knot

A couple have set the Internet buzzing with their emotional love story. The couple, who were forced to call off their engagement because the bride’s parents did not approve of the groom, have finally married 65 years later.

According to TheSun, Helen Andre, 82, and Davy Moakes, 86, from Derbyshire, met and fell in love at art college. Helen was 16 and Davy was 21. Davy subsequently proposed in 1951 but his fiancée’s parents, Aaron and Gertrude, would not give their blessing to the union – fearing Davy would struggle to provide for his family if he pursued a career as an artist.

The engagement was scrapped two years later. Helen went on to be widowed three times, while Davy has lost two spouses. But the pair are now ‘madly in love’ after being reunited last year with the help of Helen’s daughter, Debbie Williams, and social media.

”It’s so strong the love between us,” Davy said.

Even after all this time, it still feels the same. It’s just perfect, it’s just how it was. We’re no spring chickens so we decided if we still had these strong feelings for each other then we best get on and get married. Helen is medically blind, and when I saw her I thought if we’d been allowed to marry her before I’d be taking care of her.

So all I wanted to do is care for her now. I can’t actually remember how we proposed, it wasn’t anything dramatic, it would have just been over a nice kiss.”

Helen added:

“I couldn’t be happier, all my dreams have come true. When I was 19 and my mother and father stopped me marrying him I was heartbroken and I never stopped loving him.

I’ve never found out why my parents didn’t really approve of him, I think there were several reasons but really they wanted to decide who I married – not me.

They were quite Victorian like that. I have loved him my whole life. Now I’ve got him. I’m enjoying every minute of it. I feel like a teenager again, it really is like nothing’s changed.”

Reflecting on their initial plan to get married, Davy said:

”It was very unfair, because I never said I wanted to be an artist. I wanted to become a teacher to establish myself and be able to support a marriage financially.”

Davy’s father, Edward, had reportedly made an effort to get the lovers together again at a dance in 1956 and they tried to make it work, but when Helen‘s parents caught wind of their plans, she was locked in her room. Despite all the odds, the couple are finally together.

They got married in a registry office and went on a two-week honeymoon in Cyprus.

“We’re just relaxing on the balcony together on the deck chairs after a very hectic time,” a thrilled Davy said.
