Dear MIMsters: I Thought My Contractions Would Go Away But They Didn’t

Sometimes it’s always great to get advice from experts with a lot of degrees behind their names, but other times, we feel so good and relieved just hearing from another parent with a MOM behind her name with similar experience, sharing on what has worked for her.

I am 22 weeks pregnant with my second child. I started cramping on Saturday evening so I laid down thinking it was one of those Braxton hicks contractions that would go away after a short while but I was wrong! It didn’t.

I had it all through the night and had to go to the emergency room on Sunday morning. There, I was placed on a monitor which showed I was actually having contraction as frequently as every 2 to 4 minutes. The baby’s heart rate was at 160b/pm. The OBY on call checked and said my cervix was closed. She also ordered some blood work which showed I had a yeast infection. I was given a 150mg one time dose of diflucan and an iv fluid until the monitor wasn’t reading any more contractions.

They decided to let me go after two more hours of monitoring me and having no more contractions even though I still felt the pain. I woke up on Monday morning with the the pain, so I called my doctor’s office and they were able to walk me in.

My doc ordered an ultrasound to check my cervix and the baby. My cervix was measured to be 4.6cm and the baby was doing great with a heart rate of 162. In fact,t I caught the baby smiling in the ultrasound but my problem is everything seems good but I still feel this slight pain on my lower abdomen with so much pressure on my abdomen that I can’t even move around comfortably. Sometimes, I feel the baby is practicing how to punch with my pubic bone. I have been placed on a one week bed rest and as I type now I cannot walk up to a pole and it doesn’t get better when I lay down, if anything it gets worse with immense  pressure on my lower abdomen, and when I say so much pressure I mean much more pressure that you can possibly imagine at 22 weeks. I looking to find anyone who has previously had an experience like mine to share with me.

  • Don’t worry, you shall not cast your young. My friend experienced it during her first pregnancy and she had her cervix closed to avoid abortion. She was also placed on bed rest from 5 months till her delivery day, she also delivered through CS, but she and the baby were good.

  • So long medically its not life treatening, keep enduring you will gain the pain.take care.
