12 Tips For Staying Healthy You Should Totally Adopt From 53-Year-Old Mom, Halle Berry

American actress and sweet mom-of-two Halle Berry has been health goals since pretty much forever, and the 53-year-old fab Oscar winner has repeatedly made it clear that she has a practical approach to staying healthy.

Sure, the thrice divorced actress works out and eats well, but she also makes room for treats. If you’re looking for a new approach to wellness that feels doable, Halle’s got you covered.

Below are 12 approved health habits you should totally steal from Halle Berry…

1. Working out. Halle credits her longtime trainer Peter Lee Thomas for making working out fun.

“One of the many reasons why I love working out with @peterleethomas is his inventive and fun exercises,” she wrote on Instagram .

Work around your injuries. It’s easy to avoid working out if you have ailments, like bad knees, but Halle said you just need to do the right exercises. She and Thomas recommend replacing moves like squats with kickbacks and glute bridges.

Warm up beforehand. Halle talked on Instagram about the importance of stretching and having a warm-up and cool-down planshe’s a fan of cat-cow, child’s pose, and cobra stretch from yoga. She said:

“You can’t just jump into exercise. Like if you’ve never kickboxed, don’t just go to a gym when you’re 35 and think you’re just gonna tear it up.”

2. Make sure you stretch. Halle wrote on Instagram:

“After I work out, it’s important for me to stretch and lengthen. Fitness is not just about running, lifting and punching. For me, being athletic and super fit is also about being still, stretching and breathing.

Including stretching in my fitness program helps my muscles stay long, limber, improves my mobility and range of motion and, most importantly, helps me avoid injuries.”

3. Plan out your meals. During one of her #PHITTalks in February 2019, Halle talked about how crucial it is to plan out your meals. She says she specifically plans her meals to coincide with her exercise routine.

4. Eat well as often as you can. During a #PHITTalk, Halle answered the question of whether it’s more important to eat well or exercise often. She adds:

“If I had to choose eat right or exercise, I would always go with eating right. Sometimes I’m not able to exercise because of what’s going on in my life but I can always eat right.”

5. Hydrate first thing in the morning. In an interview with Hollywood Life , Thomas said that Halle makes sure to drink a large glass of water (up to 12 ounces) with a squeeze of lemon to start her day.

6. Consider keto. Halle has been open about the fact that she uses keto to manage her diabetes. “Being diabetic most of my life, I have always had to take food very seriously. She wrote on Instagram:

”So for years, I have been following the keto or ketogenic diet. I also believe it’s been largely responsible for slowing down my aging process.

The keto lifestyle offers so many benefits such as weight loss, (moms that’s how we get rid of our baby bellies), appetite control, more energy and better mental performance. If you’re like me, you can possibly reverse type 2 diabetes, you’ll experience better physical endurance, better skin and also less acne if that’s an issue. And it even helps control migraines!.”

Halle added:

”If you’re not sure about the Keto lifestyle, take your time. Slowly get into it and see if this lifestyle works for you. She recommended monitoring your energy levels when you’re first starting out: See how it makes you feel, how your hunger levels are, how your body feels, how you exercise.”

7. Add MCT oil to your coffee. Halle does! “MCT oil, or medium chain triglycerides, is a big deal for people that follow the ketogenic diet, that’s like the fountain of youth,” Thomas explained to Hollywood Life .

8. Treat yourself. Halle said in one of her #PHITTalks :

“I think cheating is really important. Sometimes you just have to eat what you want. You have to satisfy that craving, and that’s how you can come back better and stronger.”

Try a meal replacement shake. Sometimes, only a shake will do. Or maybe you’re just too busy to cook a “regular” meal. When that happens, Halle said she reaches for meal replacement shakes.

9. Snack on berries. Halle said during a #PHITTalk that she gets her fruit fix on keto by snacking on berries. “Goji berries! I like goji berries,” she said.

10. Go big with avocados. Halle likes avocados so much, she made ice cream with them. In November 2018, Halle shared her recipe for avocado ice cream on Instagram . It’s made with avocados, almond milk, heavy cream, sweetener, lemon or lime juice, mint extract, and salt.

11. Keep veggies around. Halle is big on raw, organic vegetables like celery and cucumber slices.

“She always has lots of cut up veggies around and it’s great because the kids like to snack on that too,” Thomas told Hollywood Life .

12. Cut back on soda. Even Halle gets soda cravings. But she said in a February #PHITTalk that she works hard to avoid the sugary stuff. Bravo. Find soda alternatives instead. Halle freely admitted in a #PHITTalk that she still has a “soda tooth.”

Still, she said, she’s trying to opt for healthier soda alternatives whenever she can, like kombucha, Perrier with some fresh lemon, or La Croix.
