Why 18-Year-Old Commited Suicide Over UTME Score in Delta State

A JAMB candidate simply identified as Loveth has reportedly committed suicide after failing her JAMB exams, in Ekiugbo, Ughelli North local government area of Delta State.

The University admission-seeker, who was said to be displeased with the 168 mark she garnered in the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), was found dead at her home on Wednesday morning.

It was gathered that the deceased, who picked medicine as her choice of study, took three bottles of Sniper as these were found by her side yesterday morning.

According to Vanguard, Loveth had gone to check her UTME result on Tuesday and to her shock, she discovered that she had scored below the average cut off mark.

Thinking she would not secure admission to the university to study her ‘dream course’, the 18-year-old reportedly left the centre distraught and wept profusely.

While crying, sources at the centre disclosed that the girl saying,

“My father will kill me.”

According to another source, who visited the girl’s family residence,

“The father said he did not scold her for her result, but only told her that there is no way she would get admitted to study medicine in the university of her choice’.

“Feeling slighted for her poor performance after her encounter with her father, she went to stay with her mum in their shop, collected three bottles of the poisonous substance after they closed.

“She brought it home and drank the content. Her lifeless body was discovered on Wednesday (yesterday) morning.”

It was gathered that after her remains were discovered, her parents rushed her to a Pentecostal church at Upper Agbarho for prayers, where she was confirmed dead.

This is really sad, such bright future wasted entirely. Parents, we need to let our kids understand that failure doesn’t mean that all hope is lost.
