The New York Times reports;

Another virtual diss has turned into a real-life tragedy. A Facebook feud between two 14-year-old girls over a boy ended when one gunned down the other on a Southside Chicago porch in broad daylight Monday afternoon, police said. The unnamed teen perp, who has been charged with murder as a juvenile, whipped out a stolen .38-caliber handgun about 4:50 p.m. and tried to shoot into a crowd of people. The gun jammed and the girl handed it to someone else, who cleared the piece and gave it back. As she sprayed the porch with gunfire, she struck Endia Martin in the back, killing her and grazing a 16-year-old girl in the arm.

“What would have been, under any other circumstance, probably a fistfight between 14-year-old girls, because they were fighting over a boy, turned into a murder,” Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy told reporters Monday, according to the Chicago Tribune. “You introduce a firearm and you have a murder.”

The gun used in the tragic crime was stolen from a car April 13, and the girl’s 24-year-old uncle and a 17-year-old boy also face charges related to the incident, according to the Tribune.

“It appears that the two individuals we have in custody brought the gun to the scene — may have brought the gun to the scene — and were trying to discard the gun afterwards,” McCarthy said at a press conference announcing the murder charges.

The alleged shooter, who showed little emotion during her court appearance, was a high school freshman on the basketball team. No family was in the courtroom on her behalf, the newspaper reported. Endia and her alleged murderer were longtime friends who’d recently had a spat over a boy, family members said. Endia was a honor roll student, family told the Tribune.

“Endia was smart, intelligent. She liked to dance and to sing. She didn’t deserve this,” Lauren Joseph, the girl’s 29-year-old cousin, told the newspaper as she stood outside her home where the shooting occurred. “I can’t stay here no more. I’m scared for my life here and I don’t want to be here.”

The entire city of Chicago has been seemingly under siege during a weekslong rash of shootings and murders.
