How 15-Year-Old Mum Sold Baby In Enugu

A 15-year-old girl, Chinwendu Agbo, was on Monday remanded in prison by an Enugu East Magistrates’ Court in Enugu State for selling her baby.

The Tribune reports:

The accused person pleaded guilty to the one-count charge and told the court that she was maltreated and sent packing from her family house because she was pregnant.

“l was surprised the way l was treated when l was pregnant but my mother gave birth to me and my siblings out of wedlock. My mother gave birth to us in her father’s house, so I am surprised the way they are treating me. I was sent out with the pregnancy when Eze found me and took care of me. After delivering my baby, she took the baby and paid me N70,000,” she said.

Agbo said that Eze was nowhere to be found when the police came for his arrest, saying that she was told that Eze had run away with the baby to an undisclosed area in Onitsha, Anambra State.

The prosecution counsel, Mr P. Ogbu, said that the matter was reported to the Obollo Afor Police Station on August 6 by the neighbours of the accused person. He told the court that the accused sold her baby to one Ngozi Eze who is now at large for N70,000 and named four witnesses to testify in the matter whenever it was called up for hearing.

The Magistrate, Mr D. Ekoh, said that for Eze to take the baby to Anambra, it meant that it was an arrangement between her and the accused. Ekoh transferred the case file to the office of the director of public prosecution as the court has no jurisdiction to entertain it. He said that each of the witnesses should appear in court whenever the matter was called up for hearing and that failure to appear would attract a fine of N100,000 each and adjourned the matter indefinitely.
