‘Clock Boy’ Ahmed Mohamed Demands $15 million As Compensation for His Arrest

Remember Ahmed Mohamed, the 14-year-old Irving high school student who shot into the spotlight after he was arrested and suspended for bringing a homemade clock thought to look like a bomb to school? According to WFAA, his family’s attorneys have now sent letters to both the city of Irving and the Irving School District demanding apologies for ‘scarring his reputation’ and $15 million in damages.

One of the attorneys representing Ahmed and his family who have since relocated to Qatar, Kelly Hollingsworth, said: “The numbers are huge, and we admit that. But the damages caused against this young man and his family are incalculable.”

In the letters, the attorney claims that after a teacher became suspicious about Ahmed’s clock, “Ahmed was subjected to on-campus detention and 7-on-1 interrogation [that] went on for approximately one hour and 25 minutes […] Ahmed constantly was pressured to sign a written statement admitting that he intended to bring a ‘hoax bomb’ to school.”

Both letters claim that Mohamed’s civil rights were violated, and he and his family have suffered physical and mental anguish because of the ordeal.

Hollingsworth says the “wrongful interrogation,” the act of denying a young boy the right to talk with his parents, and questioning Ahmed without first reading him his Miranda rights should be an affront to all Americans.

“When that was done, it was done to all of us. Every single one of us have that right,” he said.

The letters claim Ahmed was singled out “because of his race, national origin, and religion.”

The letters demand $10 million be paid to the family by the city of Irving, and $5 million from the school district.

The family’s attorney ends the letters by saying civil action will be filed if the demands are not met within 60 days.

Both the city and the school district acknowledged that they had received the letters Monday, but both declined any comment until their attorneys had time to review the demand letter.
