See What 8-Year-Old Girl Who Lost Family in Fire Wishes for This Christmas

Safyre is the only survivor of a 2013 suspected arson fire that killed her father, David Terry, and her three younger siblings, Yahoo reports. David reportedly saved Safyre by using his body to shield her from the flames; in spite of this heroic act, the now 8-year-old suffered burns to over 75 percent of her body.

Although she survived the fire incident, Safyre was in the hospital for nine months; she also lost her right hand and left foot and has had more than 50 operations.

When her aunt Dolder bought a metal cardholder in the shape of a Christmas tree for the holiday season Safyre was overjoyed. “I can’t wait to fill it up,” the niece told her aunt Dolder. But Dolder wasn’t confident that would happen, so she told Sayfre that,

“Honey, that’s probably not gonna happen. We maybe get 10 cards a year, and the card tree holds 100.”

However, on 3 December, Dolder posted a photo of Safyre with the card tree on a community Facebook page, “Safyre Schenectady’s Super Survivor” which she uses to keep family and friends updated on Safyre’s progress. The next day a family friend, Kevin Clark shared the picture along with this caption,

“I wonder how many of my friends would take the time to write and send Safyre a Merry Christmas card that she can hang on her card tree.”

This sparked off a campaign to send Christmas cards to the young burn victim who lost her family in the house fire; it’s been shared more than 22,000 times and liked more than 9,600 times. Dolder says so far, Safyre has received cards from across the U.S., and also from Italy, Sweden, Russia, and the U.K., adding that,

“When she (Sayfre) opens these cards, the twinkle in her eye and the sparkle in her smile are priceless.”

Safyre’s mother reportedly signed over custodial rights of her daughter to the state. She has also been charged with lying to a federal grand jury about the fire, originally claiming she saw who started the blaze, then changing her story. Reports say she will go to trial in February.
