Jada Pinkett-Smith On How She Taught Her Kids About Being Privileged And The Value Of Hard Work
American actress and Television personality, Jada Koren Pinkett Smith, 47, has opened up on how she taught her kids, Jaden Smith, 20 and Willow Smith, 18, the value of hard work early and made them realise how privileged they are.
During a Red Table Talk discussion at Sundance Film Festival, the mom-of-2 opened up on how she taught her kids about privilege and the importance of working for what they have.
She said:
“Listen, you guys are really privileged and you are to learn how to offer yourselves and be of service to the world. I took them to homeless shelters to volunteer when they were 5 years old and said to them, “They got to see very early that life’s not a game and all of this right here, this ain’t yours””
Jada also said she made it a point to separate her and her husband, Will Smith‘s success from that of Jaden and Willow.
“I did not want them to grow up thinking that because they were in the midst of affluence that they didn’t have to learn how to grind, learn how to work hard on their own.”
She added that her kids got put into projects early in their lives — Jaden’s first movie was at 8-years old so they understood the hard work their parents had to put in to enjoy what they do.
Jada opined:
“They really had a lot of respect for their parents in regards to what we we’re doing like ‘This is what it takes for me to eat? This is it?’ “Yes! These hours, this work ethic.”
