Rare Liver Disease Causes Toddler To Itch So Badly He Cuts Himself & Bleeds

Little Alex-James Williams-Conn, who turns two next month, has been constantly itching since he was born due to a rare liver disease, alagille syndrome. He frequently has cuts on his face and body which makes him bleed as often as 10 times a day due to excessive itching.

Mum Courtney Williams said: “I knew as soon as he was born. When you have your own child you know when something is not right but you don’t want to believe it. He was so yellow and constantly itching. Then his itching got really bad and he was constantly hurting himself. I think that’s the hardest part, as mum, watching him hurt himself everyday.”

Courtney was in year 11 at Cefn Hengoed Community School when she found out she was pregnant with her boyfriend of four years Stewart Conn.

Courtney, now 17, said the condition derives from the absence of a bile duct.

She said: “Everybody is supposed to have a little bile duct but Alex doesn’t have one. Instead the bile goes into his skin turning him yellow and that is what makes him itch.”

Alex also has a genetic heart condition and has undergone surgery twice in his short life.
